Frequently Asked Questions How is my child nominated for a stay at Stewart House?
All nominations are made by your child's school Principal for any number of reasons including needing a break, isolation lack of opportunities for experiencing Sydney or a brief family crisis. If you need further information about their nomination please contact your child’s Principal.
How long does my child stay at Stewart House?
Children stay for a period of two school weeks, that is usually arriving on a Monday and leaving on the Friday of the next week for a twelve day stay.
We also host two Special Education Groups that stay for one week only.

Some groups arrive by train (where they are met by our school staff) or by chartered coach or bus service directly to Stewart House. Your child’s mode of transportation will be notified to your child’s school by the District Co-ordinator.
What should my child bring to Stewart House?
Three changes of clothing, including underwear, toiletries, pyjamas, swimming costume, comfortable shoes (no thongs), a warm top and a hat. Please label all belongings with the child’s name. Stewart House staff do the laundry daily. Your child will not require money (except for $5.00 to purchase a disposable camera if desired). All other expenses are covered. Please do not pack sleeveless singlet or midriff or muscle tops.
Is my child able to bring their mobile phone with them?
Yes, but these will be surrendered to the supervisors for the duration of their stay. This rule is in place to prevent unprotected phone conversations (in line with the Child Protection Act). In addition to this, children should not bring I-pods, walkmans, Discmans, any snack foods or drinks or money, linen, towels, or pillowcases (except for traveling to and from Stewart House).

The children have a very busy program while they stay at Stewart House. In general, it is difficult for children to find tie to speak with their family members. Of course in extraordinary circumstances it can be arranged and a predetermined time. For example, if their birthday falls during their staff or for any reasons that is deemed necessary by the school staff. Parents are very welcome to call the school office PH: 9938 3587 between 8.30am and 3.30pm to enquire about their child’s wellbeing and the school staff will pass messages on.
What if my child is homesick?
We do have the occasional incidence of homesickness but please be assured that the school staff and supervisors are trained in dealing with this problem. Usually after a day or so, the child settles very well into our busy schedule. You would be informed immediately if there is any problem.
What about smoking?
Please note that smoking or the consumption of alcohol and non-prescription drugs ARE NOT permitted at Stewart House as this is both a school and a hospital site.
