How is my child nominated for a stay at Stewart House?
All nominations are made by your child's school Principal for any number of reasons including needing a break, isolation, lack of opportunities for experiencing Sydney or a brief family crisis. If you need further information about their nomination please contact your child's Principal.
How long does my child stay at Stewart House?
Children stay for a period of two school weeks, that is usually arriving on a Monday and leaving on the Friday of the next week for a twelve day stay.
We also host two Special Education Groups that stay for one week only.
How does my child get to Stewart House?
When children arrive by train to Central Station, they are met by Stewart House staff members. Stewart House has a fleet of mini-buses that transfer them to Stewart House. Your child's mode of transportation will be notified to your child's school by the District Co-ordinator.
What should my child bring to Stewart House?
Three changes of clothing, including underwear, toiletries, pyjamas, swimming costume, comfortable shoes (no thongs), some warm clothes and a hat. Please do not pack sleeveless singlet or midriff or muscle tops. Please pack a large bag to take home gifts and a stamp to post a letter to home.
Bed linen and towels are provided. Laundry is done on a daily basis so please mark your child's name on all clothing.
All meals and snacks and excursion fees are provided. There should be no need for your child to bring money to Stewart House and we do no accept responsibility for any losses incurred.
All drugs and medications must be handed in on arrival to Stewart House. Medication will not be given to your child while at Stewart House unless prescribed by a doctor and sent in the box or bottle you get from the chemist. The child's name and chemist's instructions must be on the medication.
Is my child able to bring their mobile phone with them?
Mobile phones are not permitted at Stewart House and will be confiscated and returned at the end of the group to avoid disruption to the program.
Can I speak with my child whilst they are visiting Stewart House?
General enquiries may be made at the school office between 9.00am and 3.00pm by calling 02 9938 3100. Children are encouraged to write letters, postcards and email home or school. All email messages from parents and carers will be passed on.
Telephone contact by parents and carers is for emergencies only.
In general, children are not permitted to telephone home so as to avoid homesickness.
Parent / carers and your own principal will be notified / consulted if anything significant occurs to your child.
Access for non-custodial family members may be arranged by ringing the School Principal.
What if my child is homesick?
We do have the occasional incidence of homesickness but please be assured that the school staff and supervisors are trained in dealing with this problem. Usually after a day or so, the child settles very well into our busy schedule. You would be informed immediately if there is any problem.
What about smoking?
Please note that smoking or the consumption of alcohol and non-prescription drugs ARE NOT permitted at Stewart House as this is both a school and a hospital site.
